Bookshelves Aren’t Just For Books

Before vs After

One aspect of settling into a new home that I love is curating a bookshelf. I know that might sound a little odd, but it gives me huge satisfaction (and the family are always very encouraging, and thankful it’s not their job!)

One might think that sorting a bookshelf is as simple as putting books on shelves, but to make your shelving an aesthetically pleasing space of personality, interest and memories, there are a few tips that I use:

  • Start by decluttering and organising your books. Group them by size, colour, or theme to create a sense of order. A balanced mix of books, decorative objects, and personal mementos will add depth and character to your shelf. Begin by placing the largest books at the bottom or centre, then work outward with smaller ones.

  • Next, introduce decorative items such as small sculptures, vases, or framed photos to break up the rows of books and add visual interest. We have a curious combination on our shelves from Lego Star Wars space ships to rocks gathered from a memorable holiday. Be mindful of scale and balance; larger items can anchor corners or midpoint, while smaller pieces can be scattered throughout. Experiment with textures and materials to create contrast—mixing hardcover books with softer textiles or metallic accents can bring vibrancy to your display.

  • Lastly, don’t be afraid to layer. Use bookends to create sections or stack books both vertically and horizontally to vary heights and fill gaps. This technique not only maximises space but also draws the eye to different focal points. Consider the overall colour palette of your space and choose items that complement or contrast with it.

Ultimately, styling a bookshelf should reflect your personality and interests while enhancing the room’s ambiance with a curated collection of books and decor.
