Light The Way

It goes without saying that lighting in the home is important, it’s practical and very necessary! But, beyond the necessity of seeing what’s in front of you…lighting can be one of the most effective ways to create ambiance in a space. This doesn’t have to mean forking out big bucks on light fittings and an electrician either, mood lighting comes in all shapes, sizes and budgets.

I’ve always been a fan of creating mood lighting in our home, even getting crafty with leaving things like the range hood light on, as opposed to the overhead kitchen light. The difference that the warm glow of a lamp can make in a space to help you unwind and feel cosy in the evening is huge. You’ll pretty much never find us using the overhead lights in our home and instead leaning towards a softer, more subtle light.

So, if you’ve been feeling like your space is missing a little something or just isn’t feeling quite right, lighting could be your solution! I’ve compiled several examples of how effective mood lighting can be, as well as some budget friendly, local lighting options…

Small Decorative Lamps

Definitely the easiest and most cost effective option, is smaller, decorative lamps. However, not to be underestimated, a small lamp can make a huge impact on a space, especially when grouped in a little cluster. They can also be a great way to add an interesting shape or texture to a room, which can be appreciated day or night!

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps, whether big or small, can really help to ground a space, whilst also emitting the perfect amount of mood lighting to make your room feel cosy. Although they tend to be bigger ticket items, if you’re on the hunt for a statement floor lamp, don’t forget to peruse TradeMe listings & Facebook Marketplace for a second-hand bargain.

Coloured Lighting

I would always opt for a warm light when it comes to mood lighting, however I’m not opposed to a bit of coloured lighting. Whilst you have to be careful to not go too crazy with it (unless that’s your vibe, I’m not here to judge), a soft pink or purple light, especially in the bedroom, can create such a nice mood. This can be as easy as purchasing a colour changing light bulb!

The Gooseneck Lamp

A gooseneck lamp is highly underrated and one of the best ways to direct and angle light in a space. The goose neck lamp is great for a desk/work light but they also make great bedside lights or even perched on a side table in your living or dining room. Make sure to check out your local vintage stores, TradeMe and Facebook Marketplace for these lighting options, I’ve seen some very funky mid-century ones pop up over the years!

The great thing about mood lighting is you can really have fun with it and create a set-up that works for you, without making any permanent or expensive changes. I personally love placing lamps near plants, which creates beautiful shadows in the evening and directing light towards pieces of art that I want to highlight.
