Sleep Easy
The bedroom is a special place in the house and is typically a private area away from the public areas of living. We spend on average one third of our day in the bedroom (albeit with eyes closed for a lot of that time), so it makes sense to pay some attention to what you are experiencing 33% of your life. To get you started with a few thoughts, here are five of my favourite things to be found in my bedroom.
I’ve been a pretty loyal Citta fan for years when it comes to linen. I find their pieces can be combined so easily with new or well loved pieces from their range with their colours always being really complimentary. I still don’t think we have the colour combo right in our room (we made life hard for ourselves going with a gold headboard and a green wardrobe!). But I dream of a new Citta Thistle Organic Cotton Duvet Cover and some Mulberry Pillow cases to play to the colours in Dad’s photo – will supply pics if I achieve this dream.
Speaking of joy! If Jock isn’t dominating this very cosy spot, I love to sink into this incredible beanbag when I have a moment. Bridget Poppelwell, who helps me style many of the properties we sell, suggested this Wilson&Dorset shaggy beanbag in our bedroom and initially I wasn’t convinced that a beanbag would work in a bedroom – but I’m a convert!
I always seem to have dry hands! Summer, winter, all year round, so it’s a ritual to use handcream at night. After being introduced to Aesop Resurrection at Prefab (worth a trip to the toilet for that alone), the handcream of that variant is a sensory delight and a personal treat that I try to always make an excuse to get.
Whatever your choice of art, the bedroom is a place you can get to enjoy actually looking at that piece rather than simply passing by it in a hallway. Our chosen piece is a large format photograph by my father, Bruce Foster. Taken while living for a short time in Alexandra, Central Otago, at a wonderful mid century home with an elegantly faded and whimsical garden. This would have to be one of my all time favourite photographs I have received from my Dad, and I’ve received some good ones!
Ask anyone who knows me and you will hear that my love for scented candles runs deep. I have my trusty favourites and love how a different scent can evoke a different mood. In our bedroom my chosen candle is one that I bought when visiting the most Pinterest worthy hotel I’ve ever stayed at – The Calile Hotel in Brisbane. To be honest I don’t light it often as won’t be easy to replace, but the subtle scent and reminder of such a memorable place brings me joy.
