Retro Revival!

I’ve always been a big fan of mid-century design, whether that’s furniture, home decor or architecture. Over the years I’ve collected several pieces for our home that are either true mid-century or very much inspired by that era.

If I’m a lover of mid-century, then my daughter is THE biggest fan! For the last four years, Bella has been collecting and creating her own version of retro heaven in her bedroom. From the true vintage wallpaper to the mid-century sideboard and string shelving, Bella’s room is the perfect example of the retro revival we’ve been seeing over the past few years!

Along with spending plenty of time digging through op shops and vintage stores, Bella has found several of her favourite mid-century pieces through Facebook Marketplace. This incredible sideboard was a Marketplace find, as well as her headboard with built-in side tables and decorative fluffy stool.

If you don’t have the budget or space to bring in a mid-century piece of furniture, another great way to add a little retro flavour to your space is through trinkets and knick knacks! Bella has built up a large collection of vintage objet d'art that ties into her chosen colour palette. One of the easiest ways to do this is through funky books, especially those with coloured spines, planter pots and glassware.

I think most of us can agree that drawing the line for second-hand home decor at linen and bedding is probably preferred. Although most of the pieces in Bella’s room are true vintage, her bedding has a mixture of second-hand throw pillow/crochet blankets and duvet covers/pillow cases from Adairs and Citta Design. Playing around with retro patterns and colour palettes is a great way of bringing a subtle retro look to your bedroom or living space.

As much as I love picking up vintage pieces and hunting through op shops or antique stores with Bella, one of the great things about the retro revival in home decor is the use of retro inspired patterns and designs in modern home goods.

When leaning into a vintage aesthetic, one of the biggest barriers is the time and patience required to find those special pieces. If you don’t have the time to hunt for a swanky vintage piece right now, but still want to incorporate that retro look in your home, here are a few of my favourite retro inspired home decor pieces…
