Finding Inspiration On The Job
Working in real estate every day, I’m constantly inspired by the homes I visit. Some things catch my eye instantly, others reveal themselves slowly over time. As a young person imagining my own first home one day, I’ve started keeping a mental list of little trends, styles, and touches I’d love to borrow. Here are five that have really stuck with me recently…
01 - Colour Everywhere…
There’s something magical about a home that isn’t afraid of colour. My mother, Anji, painted our living room a soft pink some time ago. It’s a bold choice, but the gentle tone makes the space feel relaxing, and paired with other soft, natural colours throughout the home, it creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Colour in art, walls, wallpaper, or furniture brings personality to a home and makes it feel alive. White boxes are perfect as a blank canvas, but I love spaces that feel expressive, soft, and full of character.
02 - Soft, Thoughtful Lighting…
Lighting can completely transform the way a room feels. Overhead lights are practical, but soft, layered lighting, lamps, wall lights, or dimmable fixtures, creates a calm, intentional atmosphere. Studies show that warm, soft lighting can reduce stress and even improve mood by encouraging melatonin production, making spaces feel more relaxing and social. Those subtle lighting touches make evenings at home feel cozy and inviting.
03 - Plants & Greenery…
There’s truly never too many plants in a home. I love how greenery not only brings life indoors but also visually connects the inside with the outdoors. A corner of leafy friends, potted plants on windowsills, or a small indoor garden can echo the trees and plants outside, making a space feel harmonious and cohesive. Beyond aesthetics, plants have scientifically proven benefits for mental wellbeing, focus, and productivity, making them a simple yet powerful way to lift a home’s energy.
04 - Collecting Over Time…
Some of the most interesting homes aren’t the ones that feel “perfect”, they’re the ones that tell a story. Collecting furniture, artwork, and small treasures over time gives a home personality and depth. Pieces passed down through families or found in op shops, vintage stores, or antique stores are a great way to curate unique, story-telling items without breaking the bank. Don’t be afraid to restore an old piece and make it your own, it’s often far more meaningful than buying the newest thing off the shelf.
05 - Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living…
I’m always drawn to homes where the indoors and outdoors feel connected. Sliding doors, patios, decks, or large windows make a house feel brighter, more spacious, and welcoming. In homes where this connection isn’t already in place, creating flow to the outside can completely transform how the space feels and it’s a smart move for future resale. A home that feels open, airy, and connected to nature is always more appealing to live in and to others down the track.
Working in real estate is a constant reminder that inspiration is everywhere. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, sometimes it’s a soft pink wall, the glow of a lamp, a leafy corner, a treasured piece from a vintage store, or a seamless flow to the outdoors. These are the little things that make a house feel like a home, and I can’t wait to bring some of them into my own space one day.
