You don’t have to be a long-term reader of this Journal to know that myself and my family are pretty keen on mid-century design, decor and architecture. My daughter Bella is a lover of anything retro and Jason and myself are definitely fans of a beautiful piece of mid-century furniture.

So, when we had the opportunity to bring apartment 2B/186 The Terrace in the gorgeous mid-century Herbert Garden building to the market, I couldn’t wait to see how Bridget at POP Staging would bring little touches of mid-century and retro into the space. There’s a real art to honouring a properties heritage whilst not leaning so far into it that it feels themed, and Bridget of course nailed the brief.

On the spectrum of retro design lovers, I’m not quite as devoted as Bella, who would love nothing more than to live in an authentic untouched mid-century home someday. So, the idea of sprinkling little nods to mid-century style around a property, regardless of the time period it was built in, is much more my speed. Considering that trend cycles in interior design pretty much always include some form of inspiration from this era, I don’t think I’m the only one that feels this way!

So, taking inspiration from Bridget’s wonderful staging at The Terrace and my own love for pops of retro, I’ve curated some locally sourced pieces that reflect this style for your browsing pleasure. Of course, buying true vintage pieces is a great way to bring a touch of mid-century and retro into your home, but if you don’t have the budget for curated vintage stores or the time to sift through op shops, there are plenty of other fun ways to bring a little retro into your space…
