An Escape Over The Hill
This year has been absolutely flying by and it can be easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind of work, family life and other commitments. Finding time to unwind and relax isn’t always realistic, but it’s so important. Whilst a trip overseas or even to a different part of Aotearoa isn’t always possible midway through the year, we have one of the countries most beautiful destinations just a short drive over the hill!
We’ve always felt very connected to the Wairarapa and Martinborough in particular. The slow paced lifestyle over there with vineyards aplenty and beautiful scenery in every direction is pretty hard to beat. It’s easy to forget that Martinborough is only just over an hour's drive from the city. So, if you’ve been craving a break, a weekend or even day trip to the Wairarapa might be just what you need. Over the past few years, we’ve visited many of the establishments that Martinborough has to offer and I’ve compiled some of my absolute favourites for a truly special escape over the hill…
STAY - Homer
Full transparency, I haven’t stayed at Homer (yet) but it is very much on the Martinborough wishlist. This gorgeous weekend rental has been designed and decorated to a Pinterest-worthy level! With a unique colour scheme and interior, sunny backyard, room for up to six guests and just a short walk from the Martinborough square, this spot is the ultimate Martinborough acom treat.

DINE (Dinner) - Cool Change
Cool Change is a longtime favourite of ours, located in the Martinborough square, this cosy, relaxed bar and restaurant is perfect for families and big groups. With a nostalgic retro interior, something on the menu for all taste buds and a great selection of drinks, you really can’t go wrong. Grabbing a table outside on a sunny Friday afternoon makes for some great people watching too!

DINE (Late Lunch) - Luna Estate
Luna Estate would have to be our most frequented spot over the hill. Not only does Luna make an incredible drop, but the grounds and outdoor seating options offer a plethora of gorgeous spots to sit and enjoy a late lunch. Their asian inspired menu provides a vineyard experience that’s completely unique and so delicious. We especially love their charred broccolini with miso mayo and fried chicken with honey soy glaze.

DRINK & DINE - Colombo
If you’re looking for the ultimate Martinborough vineyard experience, Colombo is the spot. With a great outdoor dining area, you can sip your wine right next to the vines that it came from. Their newly renovated outdoor space provides both sunny and shaded seating options and with frequent live musical performers it’s very family (and even dog) friendly! While you’re there, you absolutely have to try one of their wood-fired pizzas…

BROWSE - Queen Adelaide Preloved Emporium
There’s nothing like a little window shopping on a Saturday in Martinborough. There are plenty of boutique stores in the square, but our favourite would have to be Queen Adelaide Preloved Emporium. Once located in Newtown, Queen Adelaide relocated to Martinborough a while back and has now become one of our favourite stores to pop into for a quick browse. Offering an epic range of Kiwi nostalgia, they stock some of the best curated vintage, including furniture, crockery, books, records and knick knacks!
